Beat the Heat with Step-by-Step Summer Skincare Routine

Every year's season brings different conditions that affect our skin. Now, summer is arriving with long hot days, high levels of sunshine, increased humidity in the air, etc. It affects my skin, face, and whole body. Like me, those with oily skin deeply understand how sebum mixed with sweat causes clogged pores and acne. 

Pay more attention and care to maintain a glowing, healthy, and refreshed look. Here's how I beat the heat with my step-by-step summer skincare routine. In this blog, I aim to help you gain a brightened and refreshed look and say goodbye to excess oil that causes acne.

How to Take Care of Your Skin in Summer?

Start Your Day With a Foaming Cleanser

Cleansing is the most essential step in my skincare routine. I used Cerave Foaming Facial Cleanse in summer as it is lightweight compared to cream or oil cleansers. It is formulated with three additional ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide, which helps eliminate excess oil and sebum, making you less likely to be oily throughout the day. 

It is best suited for oily skin. You can use it only once, maybe in the morning or evening (over-cleansing sucks skin’s natural oil and softness). If you skip cleanser in the morning, make it compulsory to use it in the evening.

Face Wash that Remove Excess Oil

Washing your face twice a day helps to suck extra oil on your face. Pimples, dark spots, blemishes, and open pores target oily skin and fill pores with blackheads. Those with oily skin should use oil-control products that contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and glycolic ingredients. I used Neutrogena Facial Scrub Visibly Clear Pore & Shine FOR OILY SKIN in the summer. 

Those with normal, dry, combinational, or sensitive skin should use face wash according to their skin type.

Hydrating Toner

After cleansing and washing your face, the skin needs hydration and refreshment. Toner is a lightweight product used in the morning/evening. Make sure to apply toner after cleansing. I used the Beauty Of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water Mini. It contains 80% ginseng water, which helps maintain deep moisture in the skin for a long time and keeps it healthy. Niacinamide 2% helps control sebum secretion and maintain the oil and moisture balance of the skin.

Apply Antioxidants Face Serum

Serums have become a secret weapon for achieving a radiant, glowy look. Antioxidants in skin care protect the skin from environmental pollutants. Common antioxidants exist in serums and creams. If you have oily skin, look at the ingredients such as salicylic acid, tea tree oil, niacinamide amino acids, red algae extract, and mango leaf extract, which help to control oiliness and breakouts. 

I added The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% into my summer skincare routine. It is lightweight, easily absorbed into the skin, controls oiliness, and brightens our skin.

Don’t Forget Moisturizer

Don’t forget to apply lightweight moisturizer in your summer skincare routine. While the air typically holds enough moisture in the summer to keep your skin hydrated, the combination of heat and humidity increases sweating, leading to moisture loss.

Sunscreen, My Skin's Best Friend In All Seasons

No matter what season you live in, sunscreen is most important. It becomes more valuable in summer when sunlight directly hits the skin. To protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays, which damage it and cause skin cancer, apply sunscreen every two hours during the day time. 

I used Beauty Of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics Spf50+ Pa++++, similar to a lightweight moisturizer, and it is not sticky or slippery even if I apply it several times. After absorption, it provides a natural glow without a white cast. Even if I use a lot before makeup, it does not clump or get cakey.

Don’t Forget Eye, Lip, & Foot Care

Don’t forget eye, lip, and foot care, as these are part of our body. Whether it's winter or summer, a complete skincare routine is essential. Before going to sleep, I apply La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermallergo Eyes. This ultra-gentle eye cream is specifically designed for sensitive and allergy-prone skin in summer. It provides immediate and long-lasting relief from discomfort, redness, and irritation around the delicate eye area. 

I apply lip balm to maintain my lips' hydration and softness even in summer. Then, I use Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Nourishing Foot Cream to treat rough and cracked foot skin in summer when humidity increases. 

BodyCare

Before the shower, I used Soap & Glory The Scrub Of Your Life Body Scrub as it helps to remove all dust particles on the body, and smooths and refreshes the skin. After that, wash the body with Aveeno Daily Moisturising Yogurt Body Cream to provide nourishing moisture to the skin.

Apply a night cream 

All the above steps help to protect our skin from harmful sun rays, acne, and excess oiliness on the face. Serums help to hydrate, control extra oil, and brighten our skin. But I need a brighter skin tone, a product that reduces fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, blemishes, etc.

Use lightweight Makeup

It is important to use fewer beauty products, especially in summer. If you apply heavy makeup, after some hours, makeup converts into sweat and oil that cause clogged pores and acne. I used tinted moisturizers or foundations with SPF as a lightweight makeup. 

Wear sun-protective accessories and clothing

Use lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses with UV protection to shield your skin effectively.

Stay in Shades

Spending time in the shade, especially during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), minimizes direct UV exposure, reducing the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. 

Change your clothes after outdoor exercise

I constantly change my clothes after heavy morning exercise, and in the evening, I regularly walk. This step makes me feel comforted by mind or body. 

Take Shower With Cold Water Only

In summer, take showers with cold water only. Even lukewarm water burns body cells, which cause rashes and increase skin sensitivity.  

Drink More Water and Use Hydrating Products

Hot days of summer mean sweat and dehydration of the body's skin. Increased sweating indicates we are losing more water, so stay hydrated and use fresh, lightweight, hydrating, and long-lasting products that enhance skin glow and maintain natural beauty.
